When you’re dealing with a personal crisis, chances are people have talked to you about both life coaching and therapy as options for your emotional wellbeing. Before getting into which option you should choose, bear in mind that both life coaching and therapy work well in specific cases.
However, there is a common misconception that coaching is the same as therapy when they are quite different. Therapy is done under the supervision of a licensed practitioner, while life coaching is a service designed to help ambitious achievers meet their outcomes for eventual success.
Below are some of the reasons why therapy and life coaching are inherently different and should not be used interchangeably.
Therapy or psychotherapy is a long-term process of counselling done by a licensed healthcare professional with a client to diagnose and resolve beliefs disrupting a person’s everyday life. Therapy’s focus is on past traumas, improving relationships, and ways to change self-destructive behaviours.
If you have a mental health concern or are emotionally unwell, therapy should be a consideration.
Coaching is intended to help regular, emotionally healthy individuals achieve personal goals like weight loss, academic success, happiness, or a well-rounded life. They identify problematic behaviours to help the client get through a mental block and create action plans to achieve desired results.
Although there is a more holistic approach, life coaching can still be a good solution for someone who is suffering from mental health and some illnesses.
The main difference between therapy and life coaching is the focus each program has. Life coaches help you to identify problems in your behaviour and motivate you towards your goals. As a client, if you’re looking for someone to help you keep focused, a life coach could be for you.
Therapy focuses on thoughts and feelings and how they impact your everyday life. It makes sense why some people use these terms interchangeably as life coaching uses therapy tools to break down the limiting beliefs and understand why you are feeling the way you are.
When it comes to life coaching, the focus is on the goals and how to take action, thus the client’s present and future. It works towards a higher level of functioning for an individual to reach self-actualisation and help get rid of any temporary blocks plaguing the mind. You measure life coaching with the client’s success after highlighting key performance indicators (KPI’s) and specific behavioural themes.
Therapy, however, strives to understand the conscious and the unconscious mind. This is done so therapists can have a deeper understanding of behaviours, helping their overall mental health. Life coaches do not require a professional degree to practice. They are motivated individuals who are trained with actionable strategies. Therapy is rawer and does not have structure. Only a licensed individual can make any changes in a treatment plan for someone with a mental illness.
All in all, it makes sense for people to use therapy and coaching interchangeably, as coaching depends on the tools provided by therapy, only the goals are different. Is one better? The answer to that is very much down to the individual and how you’d like your journey moving forward to look like. Traditional therapy can work well for some; however, more people are moving towards holistic approaches, and life coaching certainly is a great solution for many.
